Microdosing & Drug Tests
Real talk: this is the question that keeps a lot of people from ever exploring microdosing. And rightfully so, nothing is worth risking your livelihood.
You’ve got a job. You’ve got kids. You’ve got a license, a security clearance, a custody arrangement, a probation officer, or a coach who can yank your spot on the team. The idea of failing a drug test is a deal-breaker - and rightfully so.
So let’s talk about what’s actually true, what tests look for, and what you can plan around.
This page is honest information, not a guarantee. Drug tests vary by employer, by lab, and by what they’re specifically testing for. If you have a high-stakes test coming up, the safest answer is always: don’t risk it, and let’s talk on a consultation.
The Short Answer
Psilocybin (Mushrooms)
Time in System: 24–48 hours
Shows on a Standard 10-Panel? No, not tested for
Shows on Specialized Tests? Rarely tested for, possible if specifically requested
LSD
Time in System: Hours in urine or blood to months in hair (depends on test type)
Shows on a Standard 10-Panel? No, not tested for
Shows on Specialized Tests? CAN be detected in urine, blood, or hair if specifically tested
DMT
Time in System: Clears within hours
Shows on a Standard 10-Panel? No, not tested for
Shows on Specialized Tests? Rarely tested for
None of the three are on the standard panel. That’s the part everyone gets right. The part that gets oversimplified is what happens when the test isn’t standard.
What Is a Standard 10-Panel Drug Test?
This is the most common employment drug screen. It tests for:
Amphetamines (Adderall, meth)
Methamphetamines
Cocaine
Opiates (heroin, morphine, codeine)
Phencyclidine (PCP)
Marijuana (THC)
Barbiturates
Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, etc.)
Methadone
Propoxyphene (or sometimes other opioids)
What’s not on it: Psilocybin, LSD, DMT, ayahuasca, ketamine. None of the major psychedelics.
If you’re being tested for a job, a sport, or most legal situations, this is the test you’re getting. And on this test, microdoses of mushrooms, LSD, or DMT will not show up.
Mushrooms (Psilocybin) and Drug Tests
Standard 10-panel: Not tested for.
Specialized tests: Psilocybin can technically be detected in urine, but it’s almost never tested for outside of medical or research contexts. The cost of adding it to a panel is high and the use case is narrow, so most employers don’t.
How long it stays in your body: Usually completely out of your system within 24–48 hours.
Bottom line: Microdose mushrooms are one of the lowest-risk substances when it comes to drug testing. Not zero - nothing is zero - but very low.
LSD and Drug Tests
This is where I want to be most careful, because LSD is the one with the most misinformation out there. Many sites will tell you LSD doesn’t show up on drug tests at all. That’s not fully accurate.
Standard 10-panel: Not tested for. So for most employment screenings, you’re fine.
Specialized tests: LSD CAN be detected on:
Urine tests - for hours to a few days after use. Many LSD-positive urine tests pick up a metabolite called 2-oxo-3-hydroxy-LSD, which can be detected longer than LSD itself.
Blood tests - for hours after use, sometimes up to a day or two.
Hair tests - possibly for months after last use.
These tests are not standard and have to be specifically requested. The situations where someone might run an LSD-specific test include:
Some federal jobs and security clearances
Some military testing
Some legal/forensic situations
Some athletic doping screens
Some specialized medical contexts
How long LSD stays in your body varies by:
Height and weight
Age
Genetics and body fat content
Amount taken
How you took it
Drug quality
Your metabolism
Liver and kidney health
Hydration
Bottom line: LSD will not show up on a typical job drug test. But if you’re being tested in a higher-stakes context (federal, military, athletic, court-ordered), assume LSD can be tested for if someone wants to find it. Hair tests in particular have a long detection window.
DMT and Drug Tests
Standard 10-panel: Not tested for.
Specialized tests: DMT is rarely tested for outside of research contexts. It can technically be detected with the right test, but the window is very short - DMT clears your body within hours.
Bottom line: Of the three medicines I work with, DMT is the lowest-risk for drug testing, simply because it leaves your system so fast.
What About Hair Follicle Tests?
Hair tests are the wild card. A hair sample can show drug use going back 90 days or more depending on hair length. They’re not common for employment, but they do come up:
Some federal hiring
Some court / custody situations
Some safety-sensitive industries (commercial driving, aviation, certain healthcare roles)
For psilocybin and DMT, hair tests aren’t typically run. For LSD, hair tests can detect it for months after use - though this is still a specialized, not standard, screening.
What If I Have a Test Coming Up?
The safest answer is always: pause your protocol.
A microdose isn’t worth a job, a custody hearing, or your peace of mind. If you know you have a test scheduled - or one that could come up on short notice - wait until after it's done before you start or restart.
For mushrooms and DMT, you generally only need a few days of clear time to be safe on standard panels. For LSD, give yourself more room - at least a week for urine and blood, longer for hair.
We talk about this every time on consultations. If your situation involves regular or random testing, microdosing might not be the right fit for this season of your life - and that’s a real conversation to have.
What I Won't Tell You
I won’t tell you that you’ll definitely pass a drug test.
I won’t tell you to lie to an employer or a court.
I won’t pretend the risk is zero, because it’s not.
What I will tell you is what’s actually true, what most tests do and don’t look for, and what your real options are. From there, the decision is yours.
I get deeper into the legal landscape, the ethics of testing, and what to do if microdosing matters more to you than the system thinks it should in my book Bitches Be Trippin’.
