What are Magic Mushrooms?

Okay, this is where it all started for me - and honestly, where it starts for most people.

Mushrooms. The OG. Nature’s original mood booster.

But before you picture tie-dye and someone giggling on a couch, let me tell you what’s actually going on - because the real story is so much more interesting than that.

A Little History

Psilocybin mushrooms have been used by humans for at least 10,000 years. We know this because of cave paintings. Actual cave paintings. Indigenous cultures across Mexico, Central America, and beyond used them in sacred ceremonies for healing, clarity, and connecting with the divine. The Mazatec people of Mexico called them teonanácatl - “flesh of the gods.”

Then in 1957, a banker named R. Gordon Wasson published an article in Life magazine about participating in a Mazatec mushroom ceremony - and the Western world lost its mind. Timothy Leary got involved. The counterculture adopted psychedelics. And by 1970, psilocybin was classified as a Schedule I substance - meaning the government officially declared it had no medical value and a high potential for abuse.

Except... they were wrong.

We know that now because the research never fully stopped, and in recent years it has absolutely exploded. Johns Hopkins, NYU, Imperial College London - some of the most respected research institutions in the world are publishing studies showing that psilocybin is one of the most promising tools we have for treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, addiction, and end-of-life distress.

All Mushrooms Are Magic.

The Science

Psilocybin is the active compound in “magic” mushrooms. When you consume it, your body converts it into psilocin, which then binds to serotonin receptors in your brain - particularly the 5-HT2A receptor, the same one involved in mood regulation, emotional processing, and perception.

Here’s the part that gets scientists genuinely excited: psilocybin appears to temporarily quiet the default mode network - the part of your brain that runs the constant background chatter. The self-criticism. The worry. The “I’m not enough” loop. It essentially gives your brain a chance to press reset and form new, healthier patterns of thinking.

At a microdose level - we’re talking 50 to 300 milligrams of dried mushroom - none of this is dramatic or overwhelming. It’s subtle. You’re not going to see anything. You’re not going to feel “high.” What people most commonly report is:

  • Improved mood and emotional stability

  • Less anxiety, especially social anxiety

  • Better focus and mental clarity

  • More patience - with themselves and with others

  • A general sense that life feels a little more okay

  • Better sleep (especially with certain protocols)

  • Reduced PMS symptoms (yes, really - the research is there)

It’s the difference between feeling like you’re dragging yourself through the day and feeling like a better version of yourself.

How Mushrooms Are Used for Microdosing

Mushroom microdosing is the most accessible entry point for most people, and it’s where the majority of my clients start. Capsules are the most common way to take the microdoses because these babies need to process through your stomach. This also allows for each dose to be consistent - no guessing with the “just a little handful” method.

Now you have probably head of “protocols” which is a fancy term for scheduled dosing. I just want to let you know that no matter what you read the best protocol is intuitive protocol - the one that works for you and your needs. You can take them in the morning, in the evening, once every other day, only on the weekends, whatever calls to you. Just allow for 1-2 days off a week for a tolerance reset. Nothing is written in stone when it comes to protocols - but we do want to be aware and present during the four to eight weeks so that we can see what is working and what is not.

You’ll also hear a lot about “stacks” which is another fancy term for blend - complementary minerals or herbs that are put in the capsule with the magic mushrooms to help with your desired outcome. That could be Lion’s Mane for focus or Reishi for calming. These are not psychoactive mushrooms, but they amplify some of the benefits when taken together.

My protocols and stacks are customized based on what you need. MOOD. SLEEP. CREATIVE. I’m not handing you a one-size-fits-all answer, because you are not one-size-fits-all.

Will I Trip Out?

This is the question I get more than any other, and I love it because it gives me a chance to say: ABSOLUTELY NOT!

A microdose is, by definition, sub-perceptual - meaning not noticeable. That means you don’t feel it the way you would a full dose. There are no visuals. No loss of control. No “bad trips.” No trips at all. You are fully present, fully functional, and fully yourself - just maybe a little more at ease in your own skin.

The goal is never to take you out of your life. It’s to help you actually show up for it.

Is it Safe?

Psilocybin mushrooms are non-addictive, non-toxic, and you cannot overdose on them. Johns Hopkins researchers have rated psilocybin as one of the safest substances studied - safer than alcohol, safer than tobacco, safer than many over-the-counter medications.

They’re not for everyone. If you have a personal or family history of psychosis or schizophrenia, we’d have a different conversation. But for the vast majority of people the risk profile is remarkably low.

What’s riskier, in my opinion, is going through life feeling disconnected, anxious, and stuck - when there’s another option sitting right here in nature, waiting for you to give it a chance.

Ready to Learn More?

I've been doing this for over six years. I’ve talked to hundreds of people who were curious, nervous, skeptical, and hopeful - sometimes all at once. And there is truly no question I haven’t heard, no fear I’ll judge you for, and no conversation I’m not ready to have.

Book your consultation. We’ll talk about where you are, what you’re looking for, and whether a mushroom microdose protocol might be the missing piece.

You Are Magic. Let’s help you remember that.
