What is a Microdosing Stack?
If you've read anything about microdosing, you’ve probably seen the word “stack” thrown around - and it sounds fancier than it actually is.
A stack is just a combination. You’re stacking your microdose with other supportive (non-psychoactive) mushrooms, herbs, or nutrients to amplify the specific benefits you’re going for.
That’s it. That’s the whole thing.
The reason stacks matter is that the right combination can make your protocol more effective for you - your goals, your body, your life.
The Most Famous Stack: The Stamets Stack
The original stack was developed by mycologist Paul Stamets, one of the most respected figures in the mushroom world. The Stamets Stack pairs:
Psilocybin microdose (the magic mushroom)
Lion's Mane mushroom (for cognitive support)
Niacin (vitamin B3) (for circulation and absorption)
The thinking: psilocybin promotes neuroplasticity. Lion’s Mane supports nerve growth factor (NGF). Niacin causes vasodilation, which helps the active compounds reach more of the brain. Stacked together, the theory is they amplify each other.
The Stamets Stack is the foundation, but it’s not the only stack - and for many clients, it’s not the right one. Stacking has gotten a lot more nuanced since.
The Supportive Mushrooms (Non-Psychoactive)
This is where the “All Mushrooms Are Magic” line gets real. There are dozens of mushrooms used medicinally - none of them psychedelic, all of them genuinely useful. The most common ones in microdosing stacks:
Lion's Mane
What it does: Supports nerve growth factor (NGF), which is associated with neuroplasticity, cognitive function, focus, and memory. There’s emerging research on its potential to support brain health long-term.
Best for: Focus, creativity, ADHD support, mental clarity, long-term cognitive health
Pairs with: LSD, psilocybin, especially the CREATIVE and FOCUS protocols
Reishi
What it does: Reishi is the “calming” mushroom. It's been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years for nervous system support, immune function, and adaptogenic stress regulation.
Best for: Sleep, anxiety, nervous system regulation, stress recovery
Pairs with: Psilocybin, especially the MOOD and SLEEP protocols
Cordyceps
What it does: Cordyceps support cellular energy production (ATP) and stamina. Athletes use it for endurance. Most of us use it for clean energy that doesn’t crash like caffeine does.
Best for: Energy, focus, athletic performance, fighting daytime fatigue
Pairs with: LSD, psilocybin, especially focus and creativity protocols
Chaga
What it does: Powerful antioxidant, immune support, anti-inflammatory at a cellular level.
Best for: Long-term wellness, immune support, reducing chronic inflammation
Pairs with: Any protocol where general health support is a priority
Turkey Tail
What it does: Strong immune support, well-researched for gut health and immune modulation.
Best for: Gut health, immune support, recovery
Pairs with: Protocols where gut function matters (especially mushroom-based ones, since they enter through digestion)
Other Supportive Add-Ins
Beyond the mushrooms, certain herbs and nutrients also show up in stacks:
Niacin (B3) - the Stamets original. Circulation, absorption, vasodilation.
L-theanine - calming amino acid found in green tea. Often paired with focus-oriented stacks.
Ashwagandha - adaptogenic herb for stress and cortisol regulation. Common in MOOD and SLEEP protocols.
Rhodiola - adaptogen for energy and mental endurance.
Magnesium glycinate - for sleep, muscle relaxation, and nervous system support.
This isn’t a complete list - there are dozens more. The point isn’t to take everything. It’s to add the specific things that match what you’re trying to support.
Why Stacks Matter (and When They Don't)
The right stack can:
Amplify the specific benefit you’re going for
Smooth out potential side effects (Reishi can help if mushrooms feel slightly activating; Lion’s Mane can sharpen focus if you’re dosing for creativity)
Support your body’s underlying systems (gut health, immunity, inflammation, energy)
Make the protocol feel more complete rather than like a single ingredient working alone
When stacks don’t matter as much:
If you’re new to microdosing and we want to start simple
If you’re trying to figure out what the microdose alone does for you before adding variables
If your goal is very narrow and the base medicine handles it well on its own
Most clients eventually move into a stacked protocol, but the timing varies.
Quality Matters
If you’re going to stack supportive mushrooms, quality is critical:
Quality products. Many cheap supplements have lower active compounds.
Verified dual or triple extract (water + alcohol) so you get both the water-soluble and the alcohol-soluble compounds.
Lab-tested for purity - heavy metals, contaminants, accurate dosing.
I source the stacks for my clients from verified, lab-tested suppliers because the difference between a real Lion’s Mane extract and a cheap drug-store one is enormous.
DIY Stacking vs. Working With Someone
You can absolutely figure out stacks on your own. The information is out there, and many people self-stack successfully.
What you get when we do this together:
The right combination for your goals - not a template
Quality control - I know what I source, where it comes from, and what’s in it
Adjustment as we go - what works at week one may not be what you need at week five
Someone to ask - when something feels off, you’re not alone
I write more about my own journey learning the medicinal mushroom world - the science, the politics, and the surprises - in my book Bitches Be Trippin’.
